Ian Tsung-yen Chen, an assistant professor at National Sun Yat-sen University, said it reflectsprudence of the U.S. in handling the Taiwan issue. The U.S. has many considerations in theIndo-Pacific and must take into account China's reaction and the willingness of other countriesif Taiwan joins, he said.
But Chen warned against the view that Taiwan's chip industry helps secure U.S. support. WhenTaiwanese semiconductor investments are forced to branch out to the U.S. and whentechnologies in other countries catch up, Taiwan's importance in this field will vanish, he toldNikkei Asia.
"Only Taiwan's strategic position -- Taiwan's geopolitical position in the Asia-Pacific region --will not disappear."
