Pelosi's trip will benefit the ruling DPP ahead of the November local elections, accordingto Ian Tsung-yen Chen, an associate professor at National Sun Yat-sen University. The vote is seen as a litmus test before the 2024 presidential polls.
"Most Taiwanese are supportive [of Pelosi's visit]. The most negative view here is thatthe trip doesn't help Taiwan and therefore isn't necessary, but voices that she shouldn'tcome to Taiwan are few and far between," the professor told Nikkei Asia.
