Taiwan's Economic Nexus in U.S.-China Competition: A Geo-Economic Interest Perspective

Abstract

Taiwan occupies a pivotal position in the economic dimension of great power rivalry between the United States and China. Its importance lies in sustaining the movement of goods, energy, and technology that keep global supply chains running and shape the balance of power in the Indo-Pacific. This study argues that Taiwan's economic stability is essential for maintaining access to critical networks that support the relative capabilities of the United States and its allies. Using trade data and policy analysis, it examines three key sectors, namely food, energy, and semiconductors, to show how disruptions around Taiwan could trigger wider global economic instability. It also explores how Taiwan has become an active participant in US-led initiatives to strengthen supply chain resilience and technological cooperation. The findings reveal that Taiwan's role in global economic systems is both practical and strategic. Its stability underpins not only regional prosperity but also the ability of democratic partners to respond to China's expanding influence. By linking material interdependence with strategic behaviour, this study contributes to understanding how economic networks shape great power rivalry in the twenty-first century.
