Abstract

In Taiwan's case, there was little room for operating a hedging strategy up until the 1980s, as before then the Kuomintang 國民黨 (KMT, Chinese Nationalist Party) administration had a military alliance with Washington against Beijing. At that time, the People's Republic of China (PRC) had not yet evolved into a potential competitor to the United States and therefore uncertainty arising from US-China rivalry had not yet emerged. Additionally, the KMT government was still rather hostile toward the PRC and did not yet covet China's economic opportunities.
