Abstract

As US-China relations deteriorated during the Donald Trump administration, Taiwan was left more room to enhance its soft-balancing strategy. The 2019 Taiwan Allies International Protection and Enhancement Initiative (TAIPEI) Act, by force of which Washington endeavors to help Taiwan secure diplomatic relations with the United States' existing allies, as well as to prevent any form of coercion that would jeopardize the security or the stability of the social or economic systems of the people of Taiwan, became a US domestic law in 2020. Taiwan has also increased its informal military cooperation with the United States, for instance by carrying out joint military exercises and engaging in arms sales.
